Triple Crown Winner Jewelry
For Thoroughbred racing fans, this is the most exciting time of the year! I never miss watching the Derby, Preakness and the Belmont, whether there’s a Triple Crown on the line or not. I’ve been a racing fan my whole life and have always been captivated by the beauty and majesty of racehorses – and especially the Triple Crown winners.
Nine years ago, there wasn’t any horse racing jewelry available that featured a realistic portrait of Secretariat. Having created licensed Barbaro jewelry, naturally I was anxious to do a great piece for Secretariat. All of the merchandise for him must be approved and licensed, so after two years of persistence, Mrs. Chenery granted me permission to begin. I was thrilled! Choosing the right photo of the Triple Crown Champion to reproduce was easy – his iconic look on the TIME magazine cover will never be forgotten! Secretariat even has his own U.S. postage stamp with this cover. Since then, I’ve added many different versions of his portrait in my race horse jewelry collection, including the hand-applied blue enamel on his blinkers. The newest piece is done in vermeil, which is 14k gold over sterling silver. A portion of the proceeds from every sale goes to the Secretariat Foundation which benefits a variety of horse charities and organizations.
Racing fans had to wait a very long time following Affirmed’s Triple Crown victory for another champion – 37 years! When American Pharoah finally accomplished what a lot of people felt had become “impossible” and won the three classic races in 2015, customers asked right away if I could make AP horse racing jewelry. His owner was very helpful and the result was another license and a handsome collection featuring Pharoah’s noble head in a horseshoe, a triangle setting representing the Triple Crown trophy and simply a portrait on its own. Old Friends in Georgetown, KY benefits from the purchase of his designs.
And finally, Justify!! Whoever would have thought we’d have another Triple Crown winner so soon after American Pharoah… I’m still amazed! Meeting him was a huge thrill. He and AP truly have “presence” and they know they are special horses! Arranging to produce his licensed race horse jewelry, and especially the fact that it benefits the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund (PDJF), has been another highlight of my 25 years in business. My Justify designs are available with his head on a star representing WinStar’s logo, or the winner’s circle represented as a disc or circle design. There are many other choices including necklaces or bracelets with malachite beads. Which foal or yearling frolicking in a field will be added next to the list of Triple Crown winners? I’ll be watching to find out and hope you will be too – wearing a piece of my horse racing jewelry!
